Running in the Texas Heat.
20. July 2009 by admin.

I just read a great article by Runners World that described the affects of the body caused by running in the heat. They had a volunteer perform two similar 60 minute runs while measuring blood lactate, body weight, core temperature, sweat output and water intake along with other measurements. One run was performed at 53 degrees and one run was done at 90 degrees, reduced from the 100 deg the volunteer wanted to run at. The results are interesting to say the least, most notable is that the core temperature of the volunteer hit 103.5 deg which is dangerously close to heat stroke. This test was performed in a controlled lab environment so humidity was not a factor here, as it is in here in Houston. If you have any friends that enjoy running please forward them this link as it is important to know what kind of dangers they are potentially exposing themselves to. Make sure to stay hydrated on all runs, pre and post run, and during run as well. Hit the link to read the article. Read the rest of this entry »
