Overheard while out and about…
1. December 2009 by admin.
Yesterday I overheard two women talking about seeing a doctor for some injury that one of them had recently had. I didn’t catch the conversation in its entirety so I can’t and don’t want to speculate about the final outcome of their full opinions but the part that I did catch disturbed me greatly. Exercise Machine Madness!
10. September 2009 by admin.

A recent study published by the American College of Sports Medicine warns people to beware of the marketing tactics exercise fitness companies use to sell their products. One only has to look at any fitness facility and see the machines that are truly time tested as being easy to use and that produce results. You will see that none of the machines seen on late night television infomercials are at health clubs because the claims they make are not always accurate. Hit the jump for more …

Re-think the “workout” in Workout Shoes
17. August 2009 by admin.

A recent article in CNNHealth talks about the recent surge in so called “Toning” shoes that make claims to burn calories and tone muscles in the lower body. The article cites quotes by a podiatrist who states that he purchased a pair to try to see if he was able to get a workout and notice results from wearing them for a day. He did say that at the end of the day his legs did seem much more tired than they normally would but just that his legs are getting a “workout” doesn’t exactly mean that you are toning or doing good. I think this is an extremely accurate statement. If you walk around with a broken shoe that doesn’t exactly mean that you are doing yourself a favor and don’t have to go to the gym for the day. I haven’t see any of the quotations from some of the manufactures but if they claim that you don’t have to go to the gym or can use these shoes in place of an exercise facility then I believe that they are doing more harm than good. NEAT to burn extra calories.
17. August 2009 by admin.

NEAT or Non-Exercise Thermogenesis has long been known to be a large contributor to the daily expenditure of calories burned by active people. Studies have shown that more fit people fidget more during the day than other people. This fidgeting is actually beneficial in burning excess calories. So when you are working and not doing anything try walking around while talking on the phone, or tapping your fingers or even rocking an air guitar. Rock it out. Link after the jump.

Running in the Texas Heat.
20. July 2009 by admin.

I just read a great article by Runners World that described the affects of the body caused by running in the heat. They had a volunteer perform two similar 60 minute runs while measuring blood lactate, body weight, core temperature, sweat output and water intake along with other measurements. One run was performed at 53 degrees and one run was done at 90 degrees, reduced from the 100 deg the volunteer wanted to run at. The results are interesting to say the least, most notable is that the core temperature of the volunteer hit 103.5 deg which is dangerously close to heat stroke. This test was performed in a controlled lab environment so humidity was not a factor here, as it is in here in Houston. If you have any friends that enjoy running please forward them this link as it is important to know what kind of dangers they are potentially exposing themselves to. Make sure to stay hydrated on all runs, pre and post run, and during run as well. Hit the link to read the article. Read the rest of this entry »

Improve ankle stability with balance drills.
15. July 2009 by admin.

Lifehacker posted an article from the NYT about improving ankle stability with the performance of simple ankle balance drills done in 1 minute increments. As chiropractors we have been promoting these types of exercises for years for the stability of ankle post injuries. It is good that the NYT is promoting wellness prevention instead of retroactively seeking medications or steroid injections. This should never be used as self treatment to an existing injury in lieu of seeing a trained professional for a proper diagnosis. Everylittle bit helps. Hit the read more link to see the article.

Cheer America Nationals
18. February 2009 by admin.
This weekend was Cheer America Nationals at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. I attended as both a coach and as team doctor for our junior and senior level teams. One of the girls from one of our teams sprained her ankle pretty severely during her school squads warm-up and she was able to perform full out with a combination of ice, Read the rest of this entry »
